Study for the ACT

The SAT and ACT are college entrance tests that are used not only to get into the college or university of your choice but also to award academic scholarships.  This year’s high school juniors are in a difficult position because the SAT is undergoing some dramatic changes.  The March SAT is the first of the “new” SAT tests.  Because the SAT is new and we don’t have great study material or a clear picture of what the test will look like we are suggesting that our students take the ACT this spring.

The ACT is accepted by all colleges and universities.  We are offering an ACT prep class for Western Mennonite students this spring.  The class will meet 2 times a week during “8th” period (2:55-3:30) plus at least one Saturday (for a practice test).  The cost will be $25/student (which will cover the study materials).  After we have a clear idea of the number of students participating we will decide which days’ work best for the enrolled students.  Juniors will have first priority but sophomores that have completed Algebra 2 are also welcome.

The two Spring ACT test dates are April 9th and June 11th.  Your student should consider taking both tests if possible because back-to-back test are usually beneficial in order to get maximum benefit from study.  The prep class will meet during the weeks of March 7th, 14th, 28th and April 4th.  I will repeat the class in May for the June test.

If you and your student are interested please contact Mrs. Hull via email at jhull@westernmennoniteschool.org  before March 1st so we can order study materials.

Spend part of your Summer in Williamsburg

The scholarship requires an essay in the form of a "movie report" for the movie "Iron Jawed Angels".  The movie is a dramatized version of the life and times of turn-of-the-century suffragist, the historical period and experience that many suffragist encountered while working to obtain a women's right to vote.

The scholarship deadline is April 15, 2016.  We have a DVD of the movie available for you to check out.  Contact Mrs. Hull with questions.

Canada

Canada might be an affordable option - eh?

Canadian Mennonite University is an affordable option for college (they call it "University" because "college" is more like our community college).  Total cost for tuition and room and board this year was approx. $10,000 (US $).  This doesn't include trips home of course but if this is interesting you can check them out at ww.cmu.ca
