Dordt College Admissions Luncheon November 5th

High School students and parents are invited to attend an Admissions Luncheon with Dordt College at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, November 5th in the Student Center at WMS.  Please pre-register by replying to this e-mail or signing up on the sheet posted at the Guidance Office.  Lunch is provided for those who pre-register by noon on November 4th.

With over 90 programs of study, Dordt College gives you an opportunity and an education to explore your options and find your calling, while also preparing you to take on the challenges of life with confidence. Here at Dordt College we approach everything—engineering, nursing, football, choir, EVERYTHING—with an understanding that Christ is Lord over all.

National College Fair in Portland, November 2-3, 2014

The National College Fair is coming to Portland on November 2-3, 2014.  We are taking all the Juniors during the school day on Monday, November 3 (school day field trip).  However, we would like to ALSO encourage all 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students/parents to attend on Sunday, November 2 (on your own).  If you are interested in more information about this event, go to www.nacacnet.org/ncfstudent where you can find a list of participating colleges, parent workshops, and instructions on how to register online www.gotomyncf.com and use your smart phone or barcode to speed up the college inquiry process.

Many of the colleges that have visited WMS so far this year have left goodies for student give-aways.  We have:

Any high school student who gets either a parent or another WMS student to sign up for this blog, who is NOT already signed up, before the end of the day on Friday can come and take their pick of the goodies :)  In order to prove you have done this, you need to bring to the Guidance Office:

Mennonite College Fair at WMS on October 23

Fall is College Fair season, and we have 5 Mennonite Colleges coming to WMS for an on-campus College Fair this Thursday, October 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Parents, students, and Alumni are all invited to attend.  Most 8th grade, 10th grade, and 12th grade students will attend as an assignment in their social science class that day:

1st period – Government 12

2nd period – US History 8

3rd period – Government 12

6th period – Geography 10

7th period – Geography 10

Students who are not in one of these classes can attend at lunch or after school or during a study hall 4th period or 5th period.  This is an awesome opportunity to ask questions about college admissions requirements, college majors, campus life, and service/cross cultural opportunities.  If you are unable to attend, and you would like more information about one or more of these colleges, stop by the Guidance Office for contact information for our Admissions Counselors...or...go directly to their websites:

PSAT Test for all 9th, 10th, and 11th Grade Students

ALL 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students are taking the PSAT at Western Mennonite School next Wednesday, October 15, 2014.  This test is an important part of preparing for college entrance exams and other post high school plans.  For more information about the benefits of taking the PSAT, go to:

Students who took the PSAT last year can review those results and practice for this year by logging into their College Board accounts at www.collegeboard.org/quickstart using their user name/password.  Students who prefer a paper copy of the preparation booklet, or anyone with questions about the PSAT can stop by the Guidance Office for assistance.

Details for test day: 

Please get sufficient sleep and eat a good breakfast that morning.  Testing begins at 8:00 a.m.

PLEASE BRING the following items to the testing room:  # 2 pencils with erasers, water bottle, and an “approved” calculator (see College Board website or practice booklet for acceptable types of calculators).

Please DO NOT BRING your backpack, cell phone, pocket translator, scratch paper, books, etc. into the testing room with you.  You will have a short break to have a snack, but you must leave it in the very back of the testing room. 

Please ARRIVE ON TIME or early and go to your assigned room BEFORE 8:00 to check in.  Room assignments will be posted next to the mailboxes by the end of the school day on Tuesday.  Remember to leave your snacks at the back of the testing room.

All Freshman - National Christian College Fair (please sign-up)

All WMS Freshmen are invited to attend the National Christian College Fair in Portland this coming Monday, October 13th (parents are also welcome).   Transportation will be provided for students who sign up before 5:30 p.m. this Thursday, October 9th.  We will be leaving WMS at 4:00 p.m., stopping for food on the way up (bring money or sack dinner) to Portland, attending the College Fair from 6-8 p.m., and then coming back to WMS by 9:00 p.m.
