2013 Mid-Willamette Valley Future Engineers Day for High School Students

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013 at the Keizer Civic Center

What is it?

This is the 6th annual event for high school students with interests in Math, Science and Engineering. The event corresponds with National Engineers Week. The purpose of the program is to emphasize the importance of learning math, science and other technical skills by calling attention to the impact of engineers and engineering in our world.

What is the event program?

The event lasts about 5 hours of a normal school day and there are three main components to the program.

Technical Luncheon:

Students are provided lunch and are seated with professional engineers from local industries. This is an opportunity for the students to discuss the field of engineering with engineers in an informal environment and explore their interest in engineering as a possible profession.

A guest speaker provides an inspiring luncheon presentation to the students and engineers about their experiences in a specific area of engineering. Examples of prior year presentations include esteemed professionals talking about rebuilding infrastructure in Iraq and Afghanistan or building the new World Trade Center in NYC. This year’s speaker has not been announced yet but the theme will be related to the space exploration and aerospace engineering.

College/ University Session:

Students will listen to brief presentations from Universities and Colleges in Oregon that have engineering programs. Some colleges bring professors and instructors to talk to students and others bring college students that share their student experiences with the high school students. There is also an open format segment where students are encouraged to talk to college representatives at their respective booths and gain additional insight into their secondary education options.

Industry Tours:

Students have the opportunity to attend tours of projects or industries in the region that have an engineering-related focus. Past tours have included businesses such as Garmin, Vans Aircraft, the Oregon Department of Transportation, City of Salem, PPG Industries, Oregon Ballistics Laboratories and many more. We try to provide tour opportunities that represent the diversity of engineering career opportunities that are available in our community.
